History

General Information

In the early 1990’s, a group of professionals concerned about the need to improve higher education in the area of Health Sciences and Medical Training in our country, joined together to design a training program with a  holistic approach that provided the highest level of education. Their goal was to graduate professionals  not only  with a strong foundation in critical inquiry, research, administration,  clinical problem-solving skills, command of a second language and technological knowledge but also professionals with a broader view of the world, and high social, moral, cultural and ethical values.

Their goal was finally fulfilled on March 27, 1995, when UNIBE opened two faculties: the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.

Expansion and Growth

Expansion of Unibe’s facilities and programs began early in its history. By 1997, UNIBE   opened the School of Pharmacy, making it the first private university in the country to offer this program. That same year, UNIBE signed important international agreements with Universities and Health Organizations around the world.

In its effort towards excellence, UNIBE opened the School of Psychology in 1998, later offering the first Masters Program in Psychology in Costa Rica.

By the year 2000, UNIBE presented several new Master Programs: Master in Educational Psychology, Master in Clinical Psychology, Master in Forensic Psychology, Master in Intensive Care Nursing and Master in Hospital Administration.

As the university strengthened, faculty members launched the new project of creating a university hospital in order to produce closer opportunities for clinical instruction, as a result, UNIBE opened the first private clinic for student training in Costa Rica on October 21st, 2003.

Today

Graduate Education Program Growth

The faculty’s ability and enthusiasm for teaching resulted in a strong curriculum of theoretical and practical instruction for medical students that encourages educational growth, a tradition that continues to this day.

Currently, Universidad de Iberoamerica -UNIBE- has two doctoral programs unique to our country in agreement with Universidad de Salamanca: Ph.D in Medical Sciences and Ph.D in Clinical Neuropsychology.

UNIBE´s graduates have been able to participate in several of the international agreements that are offered and have positioned themselves among the rising specialists of the country.
